Champaign was founded in 1855, after the Illinois Central Railroad laid part of its track two miles west of downtown Urbana, IL. Originally Champaign was referred to as "West Urbana," it was renamed Champaign 5 years later when it acquired a city charter in 1860.
Champaign-Urbana is the home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to the U of I, Champaign also is home to Parkland College. Parkland is a large community college that offers degrees and training in a wide variety of courses. Several of Eastern Illinois University’s MBA courses are offered at this college.
